GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||
Propafenone, structurally similarities to beta-blocking agents, is a sodium channel blocker by slowing the influx of sodium ions into the cardiac muscle cells; used in the treatment of atrial and life-threatening arrhythmias. It decreases the rate of cardiac conduction and increases the ventricular refractory period. It acts on the Purkinje fibers and myocardium. The chemical designation is 1-[2-[2-hydroxy-3-(propylamino)propoxy] phenyl]- 3-phenylpropan-1-one. The hydrochloride salt of propafenone is a white crystalline powder with a very bitter taste; slightly soluble in water, chloroform and alcohol; melting point 171 - 174 C; having short half-life; administered orally. | ||
